Work in Canada While Awaiting PR
Overview
If you’re already in Canada and applying for spousal sponsorship through Inland Class, you may be eligible to apply for an Open Work Permit. This permit allows you to work while your Permanent Residency (PR) application is being processed — no job offer or LMIA required.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Inland Spouse Open Work Permit, you must:
- Be living inside Canada with your sponsor (who must be a Canadian citizen or PR)
- Have submitted a Spousal Sponsorship PR application
- Have received an Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) from IRCC
Maintain valid temporary resident status (visitor, student, or worker)
Required Documents
- AOR from IRCC (proof of PR sponsorship submission)
- Copy of your marriage certificate or common-law declaration (IMM 5409)
- Passport and digital photo
- Proof of valid temporary resident status
- Sponsor’s ID or PR proof

- Application Fee: CAD $255 (includes work permit + open work authorization)
- Biometrics (if required): CAD $85
- Processing Time: 2–4 months on average

Can I work in Canada while waiting for my PR under inland sponsorship?
Yes. Once you apply for an open work permit after receiving your AOR, you can work during the processing period.
Do I need to be in Canada to apply for SOWP?
Yes. Inland sponsorship is only for those already residing in Canada.
Can I keep working if my temporary status expires while waiting?
If you’ve submitted your SOWP before your status expired, you may be covered under implied status.
Can I travel while my Inland PR or SOWP is processing?
Travel is discouraged under inland sponsorship as it may affect your eligibility.
