What Is Outland Spousal Sponsorship?
If you’re sponsoring your spouse or common-law partner who lives outside Canada (such as in India), you are filing under the Outland Sponsorship class. While the PR process can take several months, your spouse might be eligible for a temporary resident visa (TRV) — and possibly an open work permit after arrival in Canada.
Is an Open Work Permit Available for Outland Applicants?
Currently, Open Work Permits are not available while the spouse is outside Canada.
However, once the spouse arrives on a visitor visa and applies for Inland sponsorship, they may be eligible for an SOWP after AOR.
We help many Indian families successfully transition from Outland to Inland sponsorship to enable work eligibility.
Required Documents for Outland Sponsorship (PR)
- Marriage certificate or common-law documentation
- Proof of ongoing relationship (chats, emails, call logs, photos)
- Identity documents (passport, national ID, birth certificate)
- Police clearance, medical exam
Average Processing Time
- PR application under Outland class: 8–12 months
- Temporary visa (visitor): 2–3 months (if applying to join spouse in Canada)
Frequently Asked Questions (Outland Sponsorship & SOWP)
Can my spouse apply for a work permit from outside Canada (e.g., India)?
No. SOWPs are not available unless the applicant is physically present in Canada and has received AOR.
How can my spouse work while waiting for PR from India?
Your spouse can apply for a temporary resident visa (visitor) and then apply for Inland sponsorship + SOWP once in Canada.
Can we switch from Outland to Inland sponsorship?
Yes, if your spouse enters Canada and lives with you, you can transition to Inland and apply for a work permit.
How do I prove my relationship is genuine?
You’ll need to provide consistent communication records, visit history, family support, and shared responsibilities.
